Johan Orellana is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York with deep roots in Ecuador and Spain. He holds two B.A. degrees, Photography and Spanish Studies, from Bard College where he became interested in the intersection between photography and literature.
FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH PHOTOGRAPHY: During his childhood in Spain, Johan’s family could only afford disposable cameras to record vacations, birthdays, gatherings, and spontaneous photoshoots. It was not until the age of ten, around 2008, that Johan, and family, came in possession of their first digital camera, a brown 10MP Canon PowerShot A1000 IS, paired with the Canon Selphy Photo Printer, which allowed for a fast distribution of photos and memories among friends and relatives. Johan was, of course, in charge of printing those images.
GUILTY PLEASURES WHILE RETOUCHING: Listening to photography/art talks and podcasts, especially those with forward-thinking artists.
