Born in Alexandria, Egypt and raised all over the Middle East, Salma left Dubai for the US and earned her BA from GWU in print journalism, with a minor in fine arts. After graduating from GW, she went on to receive an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute, where she met and forever befriended Linn. Previously, she was an adjunct professor in digital photography at CUNY. She has worked at Art+Commerce, Urban Studio, and Box Studios, where she had the privilege to assist Pascal Dangin on Patrick Demarchelier’s retrospective, “Images and Fashion” at Le Petit Palais in Paris as well Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s book, “1000 Polaroids.”
Salma currently lives in Brooklyn with dog Wendy, is an avid reader, and carries around a Yashica T5 (gifted by Samantha) to capture New York City’s quiet moments and idiosyncrasies.
FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: She comes from a family of doctors, but notably her grandfather gave her her first disposable camera when she was 4 years old. In early middle school her father brought home a floppy disk of the program CorelDRAW, a bitmap image editor, and that is when she started to digitally paint. Additionally, in high school, she opted out of Physics to create an independent study that would explore early Photoshop and its brand new capabilities: Layers and Layer Effects.
GUILTY PLEASURES WHILE RETOUCHING: Drinking and collecting many containers of iced tea (extra ice no matter the weather) and Limoncello LaCroix. Looking for the elusive history podcast that doesn’t put her to sleep.
